Nothing's coming to mind

Opening thoughts: Big, HUGE econometrics test tomorrow. Macro test was a good result, solid start, but tomorrow is key, so we'll see how it goes.

A lot of hoops to talk about, so let's get to it. If you were a bubble team, it wasn't a good night:

  • Wake Forest 98, Georgia Tech 91. It looked as if Tech might win this one on the road to put themselves in the NCAAs, leading by 10 early in the 2nd half, but Wake decided to play defense for the next 7 minutes, getting back into the game, then maintaining a big enough lead to win. When Wake plays defense, they can be very good defensively, they just don't do enough of it. They won't be able to outscore the really good teams in the NCAAs. Tech played well, but when your opponent goes 35/46 from the line, they're tough to beat. A win over Clemson, then a 1st round ACC tourney win will get Tech in. Wake needs to keep winning to get a #1 seed in the NCAAs. Wake can still win the ACC if they beat NC State and N. Carolina loses 1 of its last 2.
  • Miami 70, Kent St. 45. The Redhawks scored 23 unanswered points at one point in the 1st half, running out to a 33-4 lead (that's not a misprint), expanding it to a 42-11 halftime lead. This gives Miami a share of the East and overall MAC title and keeps their at-large hopes alive, which will disappear if they lose at Marshall. Even with the win, Miami still hasn't clinched a 1st-round bye in the MAC tourney. The Hawks held Kent to 28% shooting.
  • Oklahoma St. 69, Texas A&M 63. The Aggies put up a valiant effort in Stillwater, but the Cowboys were too much, hitting their free throws down the stretch to win. An Antoine Wright layup put the Aggies up 2 with 7 minutes to go, but John Lucas was too much, hitting 5 3s, ending up with 27 points for the night. If A&M can beat Baylor and win a game in the Big 12 tourney, and they end with the same Big 12 record as Iowa St., you'd think the Aggies would get the nod since they beat ISU.
  • UConn 83, Georgetown 64. The Huskies continue on their roll while the Hoyas are heading in the other direction. 19 turnovers, a -8 rebounding margin, and giving up 57% shooting isn't up to John Thompson III's standards. The Hoyas need to right their ship and win some games down the stretch to get back into the NCAAs.
  • Iowa St. 67, Missouri 49. The Cyclones were 1 of only 2 bubble teams that actually won tonight, taking care of business at home. If they win at Colorado and win a game in the Big 12 tourney, they should be in.
  • Minnesota 73, Penn St. 69. The Gophers almost let this one get away from them, but they hung on at the end to win. The Gophers now have 20 wins, 10 in the Big 10, which in the past have been good enough for an NCAA berth. But, since the Gophers don't have a quality road win, they need to win a game in the Big 10 tourney to assure their place in the field. Vincent Grier again was phenomenal for UM, scoring 27, continuously getting in the lane for key baskets down the stretch.
  • St. Louis 70, Memphis 61. This loss pretty much relegates Memphis to having to win the CUSA tourney to get in. The Tigers' offensive woes continued from Sat. night, only shooting 35% against the Bilikens.
  • NC State 82, Virginia 72. NC State can get back to 8-8 in the ACC and make a really strong case for the NCAAs if they can knock off Wake in Raleigh Sunday.
  • Southern Conference. No huge upsets to speak of in the 1st round. Davidson is the top seed (they went unbeaten in conference play in the regular season).
And, it's bedtime.
