36 hours until Meeechigan

A year ago, to the day:
It was a warm, spring-like day in Oxford with temperatures in the 60s. It wasn't quite that warm today, it got up to around 55 here in Dayton and the breeze was a little chilly, but it still felt like spring.

I mentioned that Illinois and North Carolina would be my dream NCAA Championship game, and hey, it happened. It wasn't the best game of the Tourney, but it was still very good. This year, I think the championship game I'd like to see would be Duke vs. UConn. Right now, UConn is the only team capable of beating Duke.

One team I mentioned you would have to look out for in the Tourney last year was Bucknell. Well, Bucknell knocked off Kansas in the 1st round and have played well so far this year. I don't have my ultimate sleeper yet, but I'll let you know when I do.

Funny thing is, I didn't pick Bucknell over Kansas and I didn't have Illinois and North Carolina in my championship game. Maybe I'll finally learn this year.

Note to ESPN Classic: If you're going to rerun the same program over and over, instead of showing the 1991 Podunkaville Bowling Classic or the Tyson/Douglas fight for the 156th time, why not show the Miracle On Ice???? Everytime I see it or the movie, "Miracle", I can't help but choke up at the end. What a great moment.

Here are some other things ESPN Classic should rerun repeatedly:
-1992 Kentucky/Duke basketball
-1988 World Series Game 1, Kirk Gibson's homerun
-2003 Fiesta Bowl, Ohio St./Miami
-2005 Rose Bowl, Texas/Rice
-1994 Eastern Conference Finals Game 7, Rangers/Devils
-1986 Masters Final Round, Jack Nicklaus
-1999 Ryder Cup, final day comeback by USA
-1995 Duke/Carolina basketball

I was thinking about making a Michigan CD for the trip up Saturday, but there aren't many songs that focus on Detroit and/or Michigan. Detroit is Motown of course, the Hit Factory, but none of those were about Detroit or Michigan. In my search, I found some interesting rap songs about Detroit, interesting in the fact on how crude they were. So I'll stick to the Motown groups.

Talk about a tradition that needs to end, 345 people were killed in a stampede during a symbolic stoning ritual at the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. At least another 270 were injured. Muslims stone a devil in one of the Grand Mosques in Mecca, but there are so many in a tight place trying to get a shot at the devil, causing the stampede. This isn't the first time this has happened. In fact, I'm not sure what the tradition is, the stoning or the stampede. In 1990, 1400 people died in a similar stampede, and 2 years ago, more than 250 died in a stampede.

Tomorrow, the packing begins.

3 days until Meeechigan

All of the utilities are a go, except I won't have cable and internet for 2 weeks, so I'll have to go somewhere to watch Da Bears and Big Ben. I've been reading up on all of the paperwork I'll have to fill out. I've been drug tested, background checked, and fingerprinted. I have the drive from Dayton to Detroit memorized, I'm ready to go. I'm not sure what I'm going to do tomorrow, probably more reading and some packing. It will probably take 2 days to complete the physical move-in process.

Wednesday is a big hoops night, so here are some thoughts:
Indiana has lost DJ White again, possibly for the rest of the season. They are still a good team without him, but not a great team. And he was missed tonight at Michigan St. Indiana didn't have the size or athleticism to compete with Sparty at the offensive end. Marco Killingsworth had 27 points, but 1 rebound???? How can you only get 1 rebound being the biggest guy on the floor???? Michigan St. exploited Indiana's zone, shooting 59% as their big guns were able to get back on track, Paul Davis specifically with 23 points and 10 boards.

Duke put it on Maryland tonight, giving a clinic on how to play pressure and team man-to-man defense. Maryland shot about 30% from the floor, mainly due to Duke's defense forcing them into poor shot selection. Maryland has a lot of experience and they played pretty good defense, but they have no true point guard, which will make them struggle against good teams. JJ Redick needs to be on the Olympic team, period. He might be the best shooter in all of basketball, including the NBA. Did you see the 35-footer he hit in rhythm tonight while getting fouled?!?!?! "JJ Redick, my oh my!!!!"

As impressive as Kansas's win over Kentucky was, their win tonight at Colorado was just as impressive. It can be tough for young teams to follow a big win with a win in a game like Kansas had tonight. Brandon Rush is a good player. He made the right decision by not going pro.

In a game that should've been televised, Creighton, without their best player Nate Funk, won at Northern Iowa. UNI star Ben Jacobson was held to just 10 shot attempts and 8 points. Any road win in the Valley is a good win, especially without your best player.

And Miami is 4-0 in the MAC after a comfortbale win at home vs. Central Michigan. The Redhawks started the 2nd half with a 20-0 run that covered the first 9 minutes. Miami has taken care of business. The schedule does start to get tougher with a road trip to Toledo this weekend.

In what will amount to two elimination games for an NCAA berth most likely, LSU won at Arkansas and Nebraska followed up their upset win over Oklahoma with a win at improved Kansas St. Another good win was Villanova's win at Rutgers. I know what you're saying, c'mon, Rutgers??? Ask any Big East coach, Rutgers is a tough place to play, especially coming off your first loss of the year.

In what really amounts to good news for me, everyone seems to be pulling out of the Australian Open. At the rate they're pulling out, I could enter and have a good chance to win a couple of matches.

Again, thanks to everyone for all of their good wishes, they are all extremely appreciated.

On The Road Again

Tomorrow, bright and early, I'm off to Detroit again, this time to get fingerprinted up at the Fed. After that, I should be all set to start work next Tuesday. Unfortunately, my bro is back at school so I will be in the car by myself all day tomorrow. I'll drive 3.5 hours, get fingerprinted, then drive 3.5 hours back. I don't mind driving, but tomorrow, well, I'll be glad to get out of the car.

Well, the playoff experience for the Bengals and Southwest Ohio ended as quickly as it started. Carson Palmer's unfortunate knee injury was a sign of things to come as Pittsburgh and Mr. Roethlisberger prevailed. Jon Kitna played his heart out, but he's no Carson Palmer. I don't think it was a cheap shot, it appeared the defender was trying to stop his momentum but couldn't. I don't think it would've mattered anyway, the Bengals still can't play defense. Roethlisberger was brilliant, 14/19 208 yards, 3 TDs and no mistakes. Now, Pittsburgh travels to Indianapolis where I think their season will end.

Here are some basketball thoughts from the weekend:
Duke 82, Wake Forest 64. This game wasn't televised locally due to hockey, so I missed another outstanding performance by JJ Redick. Duke led 48-39 at the half, but saw their lead cut to 5. That's when they played some defense; Wake only scored 25 points in the 2nd half. Duke is becoming scary good. The super freshmen, Paulus and McRoberts are getting better and DeMarcus Nelson returned after missing several weeks with an injury. Duke hosts Maryland in the renewal of their rivalry Wednesday. It'll be interesting to see how Maryland plays after slipping in Miami Saturday.

Villanova played a bigger version of themselves and lost for the first time Sunday. West Virginia came from 15 down in Philly and matched the Cats shot for shot. Villanova can give up points. They're not a great defensive team because of their lack of size. They'll create turnovers with their pressure and they'll be in the right position, but they're susceptible to teams who can match up with them, aka West Virginia.

Staying in the Big East, we'll find out how improved Cincinnati is tomorrow night when they play at UConn. Cincinnati came from behind at Marquette, a team that handled UConn in Milwaukee. UC is not very deep, which doesn't bode well for them at UConn. UConn will only continue to get better with Marcus Williams in the lineup. Hopefully I'm home in time to catch it.

I'm not surprised Iowa beat Illinois. Illinois isn't very good offensively, especially when Dee Brown has an off night. The real surprise was Michigan St.'s performance today in Madison. Losing at Wisconsin wasn't a surprise; losing by 19 points was a surprise. Add that Brian Butch had 6 times as many points as Paul Davis and this one was a headscratcher. The best team in the Big 10 may be Indiana. What a great comeback at home to beat the Buckeyes on Saturday. Killingsworth was his usual self, but the Indiana perimeter players came up big, hitting 10/21 3s. Indiana travels to Michigan St. and hosts Illinois this week.

Miami sits atop the MAC East after surviving Eastern Michigan in overtime. The tough nonconference schedule is paying off as the Hawks did not fold yesterday vs. Eastern or Tuesday in their last second win at Northern Illinois.

Then there are the Dayton Flyers who have lost 5 in a row for the first time in 9 years. The hometown fans are not happy to say the least.

So there are 3 unbeatens left: Duke, Pittsburgh and Florida. Obviously, Florida a surprise, but they are extremely talented. They have 5 guys who are averaging at least 12 points a game led by Corey Brewer who is the go-to guy. They probably won't be tested until their trip to Tennessee in a couple of weeks. They're the best SEC team I've seen, although how will Kentucky respond to the return of Randolph Morris. Pittsburgh is getting good leadership from Carl Krauser, but outside of home wins over Wisconsin and Notre Dame, they haven't played anybody. A trip to Louisville looms next Sunday.

If you want an idea how unpredictable college hoops is right now, 12 of the top 25 lost at some point this past week.

Talk to you all later.

Anyone Want to Be My Moving Buddy?

Moving day is 8 days away and I've yet to sign a lease. Tuesday, the bro and I went up to get my drug test/physical/fingerprinting done, plus look at some apartments. So we left at 5:30am, arriving at the new Detroit Fed building just after 9. It's right off of 75 North, just north of downtown about a mile or two before the 94 interchange. It is a spankin new building, everything state of the art. Unfortunately, the fingerprinting machine wasn't working, so I'll have to make another trip up in the next couple of days whenever it gets fixed.

I had to go to a medical center downtown to get my drug test/physical. We were there for about 2 hours. The test and physical by itself only took 15 minutes, but with the combination of coming in unannounced and the inefficiency of the clinical staff, we were there until a little after noon. Add in I had to be back in Lima at 5:30 to scout basketball, and we didn't have much time to look at apartments.

I had 5 places I wanted to get to, Rochester Hills, Royal Oak, Farmington Hills, Plymouth, and Belleville. For one of the few times in my life, I drove with road rage (a product of getting only 4 hours of sleep), as I tried to negotiate the Detroit area. We got to the first 4, but didn't have enough time for the last. I like Rochester Hills and Farmington Hills in that order, but the apartment in Rochester may not be available. The one in Farmington Hills offers a lot, more of which I'll tell you after I hopefully close the deal tomorrow.

The long day continued as my directions to Lima Senior high school were incorrect. We eventually found our way, missing the 1st half of the game. We arrived home a little before 10, basically making it an 18 hour car ride. I don't recommend it.

I actually have to think about packing up. Luckily, a lot of the stuff is sitting out in the garage, ready to go as I didn't touch it. But this move will require the taking of more stuff, since Detroit will become my permanent home, unlike Miami which was semi-permanent.

I've gotta say, it's kind of hard to believe I've hit this point in my life. I'm a grownup with a real job. My salary is a real salary, not some university stipend. I actually have to apply what I've learned. This is the moment you work for, what all of your education and upbringing leads to. Now that I'm here, it's like, "What now?" I'll get a better idea of what to do and what to expect once I get started up there, but for now, there are a lot of questions, which is both exciting and a little nerve-wracking.

One other note: I've learned that if you'd like to meet women, eat at Panera Bread. We ate at one in Rochester Hills for lunch Tuesday and I'm telling ya, it's a girl magnet. Every couple of minutes, another one would come in, it was unbelievable. BTW, my favorite sandwich there is the Steak sandwich on Ciabatta bread, yummmmy.

I've also learned that The Palace of Auburn Hills is an NCAA Tournament site for 1st and 2nd round games and tickets are still available. 3rd week of March, that Friday and Sunday. Any takers????? I'll gladly put you up for the night/weekend.

My basketball team plays tomorrow night as we try to improve on our 7-1 record. We play Sidney, a team that shoots 3s and plays no defense. I've scouted them twice and they're not very good, but they're still scary because if they're hitting their 3s, they can be tough to beat. For real, they will pass once, maybe twice, then shoot, regardless if it's a good shot and/or they're open. I'll be able to be on the sidelines for one more game after tomorrow night. I'm going to miss the guys, it's been a lot of fun.

Obviously, the buzz has been about last night's Rose Bowl. I think USC had a chance to take a big lead early, but Reggie Bush's lateral and Matt Leinart's interception kept the game close. Vince Young, what can ya say. I don't think anyone should mess with his release point, you're just asking for trouble. He's tall enough where he can get by with it in the NFL. I'm all for guys staying in school, but I think Vince should go pro if he wants to maximize his financial possibilities.

So college hoops is the main focus now and there were some good games tonight. Villanova passed a big road test, winning at Louisville. This was my first chance to watch Nova and I was impressed the way they play smallball. Their guards can all handle the ball, they can all shoot, and they can all put it on the floor. Louisville did a good job defending them, but when they guarded tighter on the perimeter, that's when Jason Fraser got some touches inside and finished Louisville off. All 4 are great shooters, so you can't play off of one and help on another. There's talk that Curtis Sumpter may be ready to come back late February. Look out if he can. As for Louisville, Taqean Dean got in foul trouble and never got in the flow of the game. Juan Palacios is capable from the perimeter, but he's better when he works inside, then pops outside after he's established himself. He didn't do that tonight. David Padgett impressed me. I didn't think much of him when he was at Kansas, but tonight he showed he could finish strong inside, and take his man off the dribble. Louisville plays good defense, but their backcourt ballhandling and shooting are too inconsistent right now.

The second half of the doubleheader saw Illinois and Dee Brown defeat Michigan St. Illinois can play defense. They are big, long, and quick at every position, except for Brown, but he's doubly quick. Michigan St. played good defense also, but Brown was just too good tonight, hitting clutch shot after clutch shot. It'll be interesting to see what happens when they play in East Lansing later in the year. I still like Michigan St. more than Illinois for the long run. Illinois needs reliable 2nd and 3rd options on offense.

What a tragedy in West Virginia involving the coal miners. I can't imagine hearing my loved one survived, then 3 hours later, hearing they were really dead. If I were running that rescue operation, I would double check everything and come up with a code that wasn't confusing. How can you mix up dead/alive??? Sadly, this probably won't be the last coal mining disaster because of the danger involved.

There are two movies I'd really like to see: Munich, the story about the aftermath of the Munich Olympics disaster, and Road to Glory I think it is, the story about Texas Western's 1966 NCAA championship basketball team, the first team to win the championship that started 5 African-American players. If anyone has seen either of these, let me know how they were, I'm interested to hear what you have to say. They both look really good.

Moving in 8 days, anyone want to help me pack haha???

2006. Let's Get It Started

So it finally hit me yesterday. I'll be moving in two weeks. And this isn't a move to school type move. This is THE move. This is the move that jumpstarts the rest of my life. I will no longer be home during winter, spring, or summer break. Everything now revolves around my work schedule, which is all-year. I'll have to find out where the grocery store, library, bank, and other important buildings are. And, I will know no one. That's a scary thought at first, but it doesn't take me long to meet new people, so I'm not as worried about that. Plus, I know I'll be busy with work, especially at the beginning, so social life won't be an immediate primary concern. But, I must say I'm looking forward to having a resemblance of one, since I haven't for 6 months basically. The main thing is that now I get a chance to show who I am and what I'm made of in the "real world". I'm looking forward to the challenge, really becoming my own person, and see where life takes me and how successful I am.

I don't know what New Year's programming you watch, but when the ball drops, I turn to Dick Clark. It was nice to see Dick back after his stroke, but you could tell from his voice he's not 100% and probably will never be again. Dick has brought in my New Year every year ever since I was allowed to stay up for the New Year, it's tradition. One thing I couldn't believe while watching the coverage was the number of people text messaging during the New Year. Instead of kissing their respective sweetheart, people were messaging with their friends. What exactly would you text message??? "Hey, it's 2006 now!!!" "Guess what, it's a New Year!!!" No really????

Tomorrow brings the onslaught of college football bowl games, the marquee game being Ohio St. vs. Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. Right now in bowl picks, I'm 10-10, which isn't very good, especially after being 7-3. So I'm hoping for a good day tomorrow so I can at least sport a respectable record.

Here's who I like tomorrow:
-Alabama over Texas Tech. When has Texas Tech beaten a good team???
-Iowa over Florida. Kirk Ferentz wins bowl games. Florida, despite being under new leadership, has tended to come out flat. Iowa will want it more.
-Virginia Tech over Louisville. Without Brian Brohm, the Cards have no chance.
-Auburn over Wisconsin. Auburn was close to going undefeated, despite losing their starting quarterback and running backs. I don't think Wisconsin's defense can stop Auburn's balanced attack.
-Ohio St. over Notre Dame. This will be a high-scoring game, but the Irish defense won't be able to stop the Buckeye offense.
-Georgia over West Virginia. West Virginia just isn't on the same level as Georgia.

And staying on a football note, Maurice Clarett held up two guys in an alley and took one's cell phone, bringing upon himself charges of aggravated assault. What has happened to this guy?!?!?! He's the reason Ohio St. got to the National Championship game (he was the offense, you have to admit, they didn't have much else), and now he's nothing. Literally, the cry is "Free Maurice!!!" haha.

I haven't come up with goals for 2006 yet because I want to see what is attainable with my job. I can't be very realistic at this point. But I wish you luck in sticking to your resolutions/goals for 2006. Make it a good one!!!
